Thank you for supporting my fundraising project to provide desks for schoolchildren in Tanzania

Education is the key to empowering girls and ending poverty around the world

Imagine being a teacher in a primary (lower) school and half of the children are sitting on the dirty and dusty floor. While you scan the class, you can see some bright eyes that are eager to learn because education is a luxury they often miss out on. Unfortunately, this is the reality in many sub-Saharan African schools. The resources are scarce and the number of children is large.

I have been lucky enough to have traveled to Africa a few times. During my trip to Tanzania two years ago, I was struck by some of the education statistics. I was able to visit a school and was dismayed to see the learning conditions. Most schools either do not have any desks or the desks available are insufficient.

Having a desk improves foundational learning and confidence. Children feel included and empowered when they have a space for their personal belongings. Performance in primary school is linked to future success and strategies that boost early learning is a long-term investment.

Over the past year, I worked with the Rotary Club of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania on a project that provides desks to local schools. Each desk, made of natural sustainable wood can seat up to three children and costs Tsh 110,000 (about USD 52.00). Thank you to all those that contributed to this effort. Through your generous donations I was able to raise enough for 130 desks for Kombo primary school in Vingunguti, on the outskirts of Dar Es Salaam.

I was finally able to travel to Tanzania in July 2021 to hand over the desks purchased. We were lucky to have the Mayor of Dar Es Salaam to participate in the event and provide the children with words of inspiration. Take a look- the photos and videos show it all! And we were featured in the local media!
